PLANTATION RUM 22 Years Old 2000 Long Pond is an extra-old Jamaican rum distilled in a pot still. This 22-year-old rum bears the ITP mark for Ive Trelawny Pot. It is a complex rum evolving into woody, fruity, and deliciously floral notes. Then, overflowing with minerality, its flavor palette gives free rein to its empyreumatic and volcanic character, to better highlight its remarkable maturity of expression. It was bottled at cask strength and presented at Whisky Live Paris 2023. This is a very limited edition. It is a single cask.
TASTING NOTE
Nose: Rich, luscious. Beautifully chocolatey, the initial nose also reveals superb notes of beeswax, candied apricot, marmalade, toasted walnuts, red fruits (raspberry, redcurrant), etc. Upon aeration, aromas of vetiver and dried rose unfold in the ambient atmosphere.
Palate: Lively, powerful. Particularly invigorating, the attack on the palate is radically different from the nose. Empyreumatic (turpentine, diesel), spicy (Espelette) and tangy, the mid-palate ventures into the world of fruit alcohols, notably wild raspberry. This is followed by a mineral (zan) and volcanic sequence full of aplomb.
Finish: Long, heady. At the start of the finish, flavors of lavender honey and wild strawberry take center stage with authority. Gaining in indulgence, the aftertaste invites us to savor various desserts (gingerbread, prune cake). The very end of the palate is powdery (cocoa) and fruity (date, fig).
THE BRAND
Plantation rums are divided into two distinct series: blends and vintages. The vintages in the Plantation range are an invitation to travel. From Jamaica to Barbados to Panama, each rum possesses local flavors characteristic of each country. The blends are blends refined by the cellar master of Maison Ferrand. Alexandre Gabriel, head of the Pierre Ferrand cognac house since 1989, created Plantation, a unique collection of rums he unearths in the Caribbean and Latin America, in 2003. The cane eaux-de-vie he selects benefit from a second maturation in the cellars of his Bonbonnet estate in Ars (Charente), and thus benefit from the talent of Alexandre Gabriel, a master in the art of aging. Since March 2017, Alexandre Gabriel has also been the owner of the West Indies Rum Distillery, based in Barbados, which has the distinction of producing rum continuously since the 19th century and is equipped with both column and pot stills.
