Tomatin Cask Strength is a Scotch whisky aged in a combination of first-fill bourbon and oloroso sherry casks. A rich, fruity, floral single malt with spicy and mineral notes. A lovely Highland whisky, and very fairly priced for a whisky bottled at 57.5% cask strength.
TASTING NOTE
Nose : Immediately quite sweet, vanilla, salted caramel, butterscotch, raspberries, and milk chocolate. Then, after a while, spicier elements reveal themselves with gingerbread, oily copper, and peppery walnuts.
Palate : Wow, quite sweet at first - lots of milk chocolate and vanilla return to the palate but with a thick, melting texture. Baked apples were found with spicier cinnamon notes. After a while, we discovered more salty/brine elements that blend quite well with the raspberry and caramel notes.
Finish : Ice cream, vanilla and black pepper on the finish.
THE BRAND
Founded in 1897, the Tomatin distillery is located 313 m west of the eponymous village in the Highlands. The Tomatin distillery distills its whisky with pure water from the Monadhliath Mountains and has 12 active stills. With production of approximately 5 million liters per year, Tomatin is one of the largest distilleries in Scotland. Tomatin is a leader in the single malt sector, with an emphasis on cask selection, whether bourbon or sherry. It even produces a peated version called Cù Bocan. The owner group also produces a blend called 'Big T'. In 1998, Okura & Co was acquired, making Takara Shuzo Company the exclusive owner of the brand. Tomatin is a distillery with a well-defined style, whose finishes are clearly discernible, without being totally dominant.
