TASTING NOTE

Nose : The smoky aroma of peat lingers, while dry, earthy notes are also discernible. A peaty, ashy style, which gives way to oak, revealing its delicacy in waves: toffee, fudge, custard, enhanced by a touch of ginger, nutmeg, and clove.

Palate : Soft and delicate texture. The balance of aromas is sublime as the power of the peat envelops the sweetness and depth of the oak. Coconut, custard, and lemon honey then meet smoked oysters.

Finish : Long, smoky and seductive.

THE BRAND

The Port Charlotte Distillery was built by Colin Campbell in 1829 under the name Lochindaal. After several different owners, the distillery was closed in 1929. The buildings, however, survived, and the warehouses on the hill behind the distillery are used by the Bruichladdich Distillery . Port Charlotte underwent a renaissance in 2001. Produced by Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte is a single malt that combines the power of peat with elegance, complexity, and floral notes. What characterizes Port Charlotte is this strength of peat present in these malts.

THE DISTILLERY

The Bruichladdich Distillery was built in 1881 by the Harvey brothers. The Harveys were a prominent whisky family, owning the Glasgow distilleries Yoker and Dundas Hill. The three brothers decided to combine their expertise to build a third distillery: Robert (23) designed it, John (31) had the distillery experience, and William (32) had the money. The brothers set about creating a revolutionary new type of distillery, and Bruichladdich was to be the antithesis of an Islay distillery. It was a modern distillery, ergonomically arranged around a central courtyard for efficiency and on a gentle slope to harness gravity—a state-of-the-art Victorian distillery. The Bruichladdich Distillery does not produce blends; it produces only single malts under three brands: Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte, a heavily peated single malt, and Octomore, the world's most peated whisky. Bruichladdich Distillery also owns Murray McDavid, an independent bottler.
