Royal Lochnagar: the royal single malt of the Cairngorms
Located in the Cairngorms National Park, the Royal Lochnagar Distillery was founded in 1823 by James Robertson, who attempted to legally produce whisky in an area then famous for its clandestine distillations. Despite a difficult start marked by several arson attacks, the distillery was rebuilt in 1845 by John Begg, who moved it across the River Dee. A visit from Queen Victoria in 1848 gave the distillery its royal prestige. Impressed by the distiller's work, she granted Royal Lochnagar the official title of purveyor to the court and the right to add "Royal" to its name, thus joining the prestigious line of royal distilleries such as Royal Brackla and Glenury Royal . Acquired in 1916 by John Dewar and then integrated in 1926 into the Distillers Company Limited (later Diageo), Royal Lochnagar remains one of the smallest distilleries in the group, but plays an essential role in the composition of the famous Johnnie Walker Blue Label blend. This royal single malt seduces with its finesse, elegance and unique character.
