About the distillery

The story of Nikka begins with Masataka Taketsuru , a pioneer of Japanese whisky. After studying chemistry in Glasgow and internships in Scottish distilleries (Longmorn, Hazelburn, etc.), he returned to Japan in 1920 with his Scottish wife Rita. He participated in the founding of the Yamazaki distillery at Suntory before creating his own company in 1934: DaiNipponKaju , the future Nikka Whisky . Taketsuru established his first distillery in Yoichi on the island of Hokkaido, chosen for its climate and proximity to the sea, reminiscent of Scotland. In 1969, he founded Miyagikyo in the Sendai region, bringing a softer and fruitier style to his whiskies. Today, Nikka is recognized worldwide for the quality of its blended , single malts and pure malts , expressing both Japanese precision and Scottish heritage. Each Nikka vintage demonstrates artisanal rigor in the selection of ingredients, fermentation, distillation, and maturation. Japan's more humid and contrasting climate accelerates maturation and intensifies aromas. Thanks to its perfect mastery of blending, Nikka offers whiskies of great finesse, prized by both novices and collectors.
