SANTIAGO DE CUBA 12 Years is an aged rum crafted in Cuba that has been matured for twelve years before bottling. The distillery produces its own molasses, using sugarcane grown in southeastern Cuba, which is then distilled before the rum rests in white oak barrels. The barrels are stored at Don Pancho's warehouse, and legend has it that due to the proximity of the railway, the barrels gently shake as the trains pass by! A well-crafted expression of Cuban distillers, best enjoyed here. The rum was awarded the Bronze Medal at the 2022 IWSC.
TASTING NOTE
Nose: Thick, rich caramel, sweet fruits - orange segments and dried cherries.
Palate: Quite nutty at first, but the fruity notes quickly return (more tropical than before).
Finish: Burnt sugar and a hint of banana.
THE BRAND
Ron Santiago de Cuba is the second largest premium Cuban rum, founded in 1862 in Cuba's oldest city, also called Santiago de Cuba. This is likely where the name originates. During the 1959 revolution, the Cuban rum industry was nationalized, and Ron Santiago de Cuba rums began to be produced by the state at the former Matusalem distillery in Cuba's Sierra Maestra region from sugarcane molasses. Its standard expressions include a Carta Blanca and an Añejo bottling, but Ron Santiago de Cuba also has a history of producing exceptional Extra Añejos.
