THE BRAND
Japan is making significant progress in whisky production. Some of its whiskies have surpassed the fame of Scotch whiskies. Tokinoka, meaning "Fragrance of Time," produces its own whisky from a small distillery named White Oak. The White Oak Distillery, located in the city of Akashi (Hyogo Prefecture), was the first to be licensed for whisky distillation in 1919. Built in 1888 for the production of sake and shochu, the site was modified in 1984 to begin producing whisky in larger quantities. The Eigashima Shuzo Company, which owns the distillery, has produced several single malts named Akashi since 2007.
