About Karukera Distillery

More than five hundred years ago, when Christopher Columbus landed in Sainte-Marie in November 1493 on the windward coast of this magnificent virgin land shaped like a butterfly, it was inhabited by the Carib Indians who named it Karukéra , "the island of beautiful waters." And it is on the very site of this historic discovery, at the Domaine du Marquisat de Sainte-Marie , that the oldest distillery in operation in Guadeloupe is located today: the KARUKERA® rum distillery. Entirely dedicated to the cultivation of sugar cane and the production of rum, this house masters all stages of the process, from harvesting to aging in oak barrels that have contained Cognac, Sherry or Sauternes .
