THE BRAND

Torabhaig is a distillery built on the site of an old, abandoned 19th-century farmhouse. The distillery is nestled on the Isle of Skye, facing the sea and a stone's throw from a stream that offers the purest spring water. For four years, passionate craftsmen worked to restore the historic building, whose magnificent stone came from the ruins of the neighboring Camus Castle (Caisteal Chamuis in Gaelic). In January 2017, the distillery finally came to life. Topped with a removable pagoda roof to accommodate some of the equipment, its nerve center houses a mash tun capable of brewing 1.5 tons of malt, eight Douglas fir fermentation tanks where powdered yeast activates the wort for approximately 72 hours, and a pair of copper pot stills named Sir Iain and Lady Noble in tribute to the couple who once owned the land and farm. When choosing this mythical island to build its latest creation, Mossburn Distillers, the company behind Torabhaig, first looked for the perfect site: the village of Teangue on the Sound of Sleat, the strait that separates the southeast coast from the Scottish mainland. Torabhaig produces a peaty distillate, one of the most phenolic in Scotland, and the smoky aromas wafting from the still room will fool no one!
