Torabhaig Whisky: The Peated Single Malt from the Isle of Skye
Torabhaig is a modern distillery housed on a converted 19th-century farmhouse nestled on the Isle of Skye, facing the sea and backed by a pure water spring. Founded in January 2017 by Mossburn Distillers, it was designed and rebuilt with careful craftsmanship, using stone from the nearby ruins to integrate local history into its architecture. The equipment reflects this blend of tradition and precision: a mash tun capable of brewing 1.5 tons of malt, eight Douglas fir fermentation tanks with long fermentations of around 72 hours activated by powdered yeasts, and a pair of copper pot stills named Sir Iain and Lady Noble, in homage to the land's former owners. Torabhaig produces a peated single malt, among the most phenolic in Scotland. Powerful smoke blends with a maritime depth, with notes of earthy peat, sweet tar, iodine, and a subtle grain malt background. Skye's influence is felt in the saline, slightly medicinal character, balanced by a rich texture and a long, lingering finish. This whisky embodies a contemporary vision of Icelandic terroir: rooted in place, open to experimentation, and proud to deliver an authentic peaty distillate, signaling that beneath its youth already lies a vigorous and memorable expression.
