Lagavulin: One of Islay's greatest peated whiskies

Lagavulin , pronounced "La-ga-voolin" in Gaelic, means "the mill in the valley." Located on the south coast of the island of Islay, between Ardbeg and Laphroaig, the Lagavulin distillery is one of the most iconic in Scotland. While its legal foundation dates back to 1816, clandestine production is said to have begun there as early as 1742. This whisky is world-renowned for its powerful style, characterized by intense peat, saline marine notes, and complex smoke. Lagavulin 16 Year Old is undoubtedly one of the world's most popular single malts, and has been part of the famous Classic Malts range since 1989. The history of Lagavulin is rich in anecdotes, notably the creation of the legendary Malt Mill distillery by Peter Mackie in 1908, in a (vain) attempt to reproduce the Laphroaig style. This legendary location, now defunct, now houses the distillery's visitor center. In addition to its famous 16-year-old, Lagavulin also offers limited editions: a 12-year-old cask strength version, the Distillers Edition with richer, woodier aromas, and an 8-year-old version launched to celebrate the house's 200th anniversary. Since 1997, Lagavulin has been owned by the giant Diageo, which continues to promote this cult peated single malt around the world.
