Oban: the small distillery in the heart of the Scottish West Coast
Founded in 1793 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson, the Oban distillery is located on the west coast of Scotland , in a town strategically placed between the Highlands and the Hebrides . Known for its smooth and flavorful single malts , Oban is a human-sized distillery, producing around 700,000 liters of pure alcohol per year thanks to its two traditional stills. Its development was favored by the arrival of the railway in 1888, which boosted the activity of the port, a key location also during the Second World War with the reception of ships of the Royal Navy. Oban has undergone several changes of ownership over time, while remaining stable, notably under the direction of John Walter Higgin who contributed to the reconstruction of the distillery, and later under Alexander Edward, who already owned Craigellachie and Aultmore. Now owned by the Diageo group, Oban retains a strong family and craft heritage. Its whiskies are primarily aged in bourbon casks , offering balanced notes and a distinctive finesse that appeal to connoisseurs seeking authenticity. Easily accessible on the market, Oban bottlings remain a popular choice for discovering the richness of Scotch whisky in a subtle and refined expression.
