ANCNOC WHISKY: THE EXCELLENCE OF HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT
Ancnoc Whisky comes from the Knockdhu Distillery, located in the Highlands, on the border of the Speyside region. It is this proximity to Speyside that explains why this whisky is exclusively designated as a Highland Single Malt, without any direct reference to Speyside. The distillery was founded in 1893 by James Morrison, an entrepreneur who discovered natural springs on the property he had just purchased from the Duke of Fife. Inspired by this discovery, he immediately decided to build a distillery on this land, hence the name Knockdhu, meaning "black hill" in Gaelic. Originally, the distillery could produce up to 2,500 gallons of whisky per week. However, after Diageo bought the distillery in 1989, the Knockdhu whisky brand was renamed Ancnoc (meaning "the hill"), to differentiate it from its neighbor Knockando. This name change made it possible to clearly distinguish the two whiskies and establish Ancnoc as a brand in its own right.
