Laphroaig: the peaty intensity of Islay
Founded in 1815 by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston, the Laphroaig distillery is a true legend on the Isle of Islay. Renowned for its intensely peaty and salty profile, it produces a powerful single malt with a strong personality, loved or hated – but never ignored. The distillery has its own peat bog, estimated to be sufficient for at least 4,000 years, ensuring consistency in the unique Laphroaig style. The water used is sourced from Loch Kilbride, naturally filtered through the peat, reinforcing this distinctive smoky character. With seven stills, Laphroaig continues to produce using traditional methods, with a proportion of the malt still malted on-site. This expertise has won over the most discerning palates, starting with Prince Charles himself, who named Laphroaig his favorite single malt. Now owned by Beam Suntory, Laphroaig continues the Islay heritage while exploring new expressions to appeal to a new generation of peaty whisky lovers.
