Long Pond Rum: Raw Jamaican Rum Between Tradition and Resilience
Long Pond, Hampden's neighbor in Trelawny, is a historic Jamaican distillery that has thrived since 1753, first fueling sugar production and then heavy rum, long destined for blenders. Its powerful spirit enriched iconic blends like Captain Morgan during the Seagram era, before experiencing nationalization, difficulties, and complex asset sharing in the late 20th century. Long Pond's modern era has been marked by upheaval: closure in 2012 for modernization, reopening in 2017, then a fire in 2018 that affected the fermentation and storage tanks. Thanks to the preservation of the precious muck reserve and the ability to temporarily rely on the Clarendon tanks, the distillery was able to maintain its style and faithfully rebuild its wood and copper facilities. Long Pond embodies a brut rum with a strong personality, whose profile is deeply influenced by the Jamaican fermentation method and the terroir. Its resilience, its history of blending, and its technical renaissance make it today a sought-after expression, both for connoisseurs of pure rum and creators of demanding blends.
