Rhum Mezan: the art of pure Caribbean vintage
Mezan was born from the rigor and passion of Neil Mathieson, heir to a spirits trading expertise and founder of the house in 1998. His ambition was simple: to reveal the raw and original personality of each Caribbean rum by selecting "untouched" cognacs, vintages from a single distillery, without retouching or artifice. Based in London, he traveled the Caribbean in search of rare casks, sometimes from legendary or closed distilleries, in order to bottle them in their purest truth. Mezan's philosophy is based on transparency: no added sugar, no coloring, no chill filtration. Each rum is vintage, from a single year of distillation, and fully reflects its origin. The cellar master travels the region to identify hidden treasures, then rigorously selects the casks, often bourbon, for optimal aging. Aging takes place in two stages: first in the warm and humid climate of the tropics, then in Europe, where more temperate conditions allow for controlled oxidation and a refined aromatic profile. The reduction is carried out with pure spring water, without the use of added sugar, which preserves the natural dryness and salinity of the distillate. The colors obtained are solely those transmitted by the wood and the climatic context. Upon tasting, Mezan rums reveal a richness of exotic fruits—ripe mango, banana, pineapple—sometimes bordering on candied, supported by an elegant sweetness and a light texture. Their expression varies depending on the origin: some reveal an almost fermentative depth, others a pure floral or tropical finesse, always faithful to their terroir and vintage.
