Ledaig 10 Year Old is the signature whisky of the great Tobermory distillery located on the Isle of Mull. Ledaig 10 Year Old offers maritime notes: salty but also warm, as if you were near a wood fire. The palate is both fruity (citrus) and smoky. This lightly peated whisky rivals some of the best Islay whiskies.
TASTING NOTE
Color : Lemon gold.
Nose : Very farmy, with both peat smoke and very seaweedy notes, sprinkled with spices and salt. Nevertheless, a certain floral freshness can be felt.
Palate : Very salty and fatty, still smoky and farmy, it is both more fruity (citrus) and malty than the nose. The vanilla counterbalances the pepper.
Finish : Long, chocolatey, and smoky, like a cigar. Slightly woody.
THE BRAND
Tobermory was originally founded in 1798 by John Sinclair, under the name Ledaig (pronounced "led-chigg"), hence the recently renamed "Ledaig" range. Tobermory is the only distillery on the Isle of Mull, and has a capacity of one million liters annually. Ledaig, unlike Tobermory, is distilled from heavily mulched malted barley; during the malting process, burning peat is used to dry the barley. The odor of the burnt peat is absorbed by the barley through the grain shell, and the odor remains through the milling, fermentation, and distillation processes, ultimately resulting in a single malt with a very distinctive peaty and smoky flavor . Tobermory is currently owned by a South African group, Distell, which owns Black Bottle, Three Ships, and Scottish Leader blends, among others.
