MARS Yakushima Japanese Spring is a lightly peaty, tropical, and maritime Japanese whisky produced in small batches using single malts from Mars' two distilleries: Komagatake and Tsunuki. It is aged primarily in bourbon casks on the tropical island of Yakushima, home to numerous rivers, forests, and mountains. Yakushima Island has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The climate is warm and tropical with a high percentage of humidity. This extreme climate gives Mars a different aging environment than Komagatake and Tsunuki, with a higher proportion of angels.
Spring in Japan is synonymous with radiant weather and cherry blossoms. It's often the favorite time of year for the Japanese, and also for the Mars whisky house, renowned for the production of its single malts. The blooms begin in the south at the end of March and spread northward across the archipelago. Mars' three aging sites are gradually adorned with pink blossoms: first on the island of Yakushima, where a tropical and maritime whisky is aged, then continues in Tsunuki, whose distillery produces a deep and energetic whisky, and ends further north at the Komagatake distillery, offering a fruity and elegant whisky, where this panorama of pink and white accompanies the melting snow. The climate becomes milder in cities and the countryside, giving locals the opportunity to gather in parks to contemplate this captivating spectacle. The concept of hanami (literally, "flower watching") refers to this traditional Japanese custom of appreciating the beauty of flowers.
TASTING NOTE
Nose : Notes of exotic fruits with grilled pineapple or ripe banana. There are iodine, almost saline aromas that combine perfectly with the sweetness of the mango. Hints of citrus and delicate white flowers add a beautiful complexity.
Palate : A frank opening with juicy fruits that allow us to appreciate the tropical aging of this whisky like a rum. The sweetness of the vanilla malt notes and the richness of the caramelized fruits complete the structure. The saline and finely peaty profile offers a remarkable persistence on the palate.
Finish : A velvety, finely woody and perfectly balanced finish transports us to the mystical mist-filled forests of Yakushima.
THE BRAND
The Mars Shinshu Distillery is located at an altitude of 800 meters on the island of Honshu in Japan. The Mars Distillery was founded by the renowned Kiichiro Iwai. Its water comes from the Kiso Mountains and passes through thick layers of granite, which purify it before its arrival. The whisky is distilled only during harsh winters and is marketed under the name Komagatake. In 2015, Mars decided to develop a second distillation site, at its historic base in Kagoshima, under the name Tsunuki. The unique climate, around 30°C in summer and -2°C in winter, should have a very different effect on Shinshu whisky.
