Mars Whisky: Between Japanese Mountains and Climate Control

Founded by the legendary Kiichiro Iwai , the Mars Shinshu distillery sits at an altitude of 800 meters on the island of Honshu. This exceptional site benefits from a harsh climate and pure water filtered through the granite of the Kiso Mountains, ideal for whisky production. Distillation only takes place during the cold Japanese winters, and gives rise to the famous Komagatake range. In 2015, Maison Mars opened a second distillery in Tsunuki , in southern Japan, on the historic site of Kagoshima. This new terroir, with extreme temperatures ranging from -2 °C in winter to over 30 °C in summer, offers a contrasting and unique maturation process . Thanks to its two complementary sites, Mars explores all the subtleties of Japanese whisky, combining the finesse of altitude and the power of the sun .
