Planteray Rum: the art of blending and the excellence of the distilled terroirs
The new identity of the former Plantation, Planteray now celebrates an art of rum that transcends borders, in homage to the terroir and the rays of the sun necessary for the growth of sugar cane. Created by Alexandre Gabriel in the 2000s in Cognac, this premium collection explores the great rum-producing terroirs of the world, with a particular focus on Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, Panama and the Fijian Islands. The Planteray blend is based on a rigorous selection of cane juice and molasses, often from typical fermentations (pot-still or column) according to local tradition. The rums are then aged in bourbon barrels in a tropical climate before a second aging in French oak at the Bonbonnet estate (Charente), where Alexandre Gabriel refines the aromatic balance through the art of double aging. In 2017, Gabriel completed his project by acquiring the West Indies Rum Distillery (Barbados), giving him access to historic facilities such as the Rockley Pot Still (built in the 1780s, recommissioned in 2023) and the Jamaican distilleries Long Pond and Clarendon through his partnership with the National Rums of Jamaica. These tools allow him to capture the diversity of local expressions and enhance them through his blends. From Stiggins' Fancy Pineapple to Xaymaca, including Cut & Dry and Single Casks, each bottle embodies a unique taste journey. Planteray now offers a premium alternative to whisky or cognac, with a rich aromatic structure, a controlled dosage (often between 40% and 50%), and a recognizable visual signature (raffia bottle). Available for purchase in specialty stores, wine merchant networks, or online, Planteray remains true to its values: openness to local areas, ethics, traditional know-how, and transparency. For SEO or merchandising, it highlights the revival of the name, the identity of the local areas, and the unique double-aging technique.
