About the distillery
The Lagavulin Distillery , whose name means "the mill in the valley" in Gaelic, is located in the south of the island of Islay, between its famous neighbors Ardbeg and Laphroaig. While traces of illicit distillation can be found as early as 1742, it was in 1816 that John Johnston officially founded the distillery. From the very beginning, Lagavulin stood out with its unique style: an intensely peaty, smoky and iodized whisky, which became one of Islay's unmistakable signatures. Over the centuries, Lagavulin has had a turbulent history, marked by rivalries with Laphroaig, including the creation of the legendary Malt Mill distillery in 1908, intended to compete with its neighbor. Although this adventure was short-lived, it still contributes to the Lagavulin legend today. The Malt Mill site is now part of the visitor center, which has become an iconic destination for whisky lovers. Lagavulin has endured difficult times, including the closure of its malthouse in 1974 and the crisis of the 1980s, but it has bounced back and established itself as a pillar of Scotch whisky. Since 1997, it has been owned by the Diageo group, which has contributed to its international reputation while preserving its authentic character. The distillery now produces several expressions, including the 16 Year Old, the Distillers Edition , 12 Year Old cask strength versions, and special editions. A symbol of the Classic Malts of Scotland range since 1989, the Lagavulin 16 Year Old is the house's most iconic expression. It has received numerous international awards and remains an absolute benchmark for lovers of peaty whiskies.
