About the distillery
The Distillerie des Menhirs , located in Plomelin near Quimper in Brittany, is a unique family business, a pioneer in the production of buckwheat whiskies. Founded by the Le Lay family, it has been perpetuating artisanal know-how rooted in Breton traditions for five generations. In 1998, Guy Le Lay decided to transform buckwheat, Brittany's emblematic cereal, into whisky, giving birth to the EDDU range – which means "black wheat" in the Breton language. Distillation is carried out in Charentais stills, usually reserved for cognac, allowing the production of eaux-de-vie of great finesse. Aging takes place exclusively in French oak barrels , from Limousin or the Brocéliande forest, giving EDDU whiskies a unique aromatic complexity, marked by spicy, floral and woody notes. This bold choice sets the distillery apart on the international scene and asserts its deeply Breton identity. The EDDU range is available in several expressions, including EDDU Silver , EDDU Brocéliande and EDDU 10 ans , which embodies the pinnacle of the house's expertise.
