Père Labat Rum: The Authentic Heritage of Marie-Galante
Père Labat Rum is one of the iconic signatures of the island of Marie-Galante. Distilled at the Poisson distillery, on the Maréchal Estate, founded in 1822, it perpetuates ancestral know-how linked to sugarcane cultivation and the production of traditional agricultural rum. The brand was born in the 1910s under the leadership of Edouard Rameaux, a visionary distiller who gradually introduced pure juice distillation at a time when molasses was still dominant. Over the decades, the distillery was modernized: in the 1930s with the arrival of steam equipment and a still from Barbados, then in the 1950s with the installation of the current distillation column. Despite periods of shutdown and restart, notably the revival led by Ernest Renault in the 1970s, Père Labat remains a house closely linked to the history of agricultural rum on Marie-Galante. Today, the Père Labat range offers two emblematic white rums, one at 50% and the other at 59%, renowned for their aromatic intensity and vegetal freshness, as well as an amber rum, a Cuvée Spéciale, and an 8-year-old rum. These expressions reflect the richness of the Marie-Galante terroir and the desire to preserve artisanal production. A symbol of authenticity and tradition, Père Labat rum embodies the soul of Marie-Galante and is aimed at enthusiasts seeking agricultural rums with character, produced with respect for the terroir and historical methods.
