Champagne Drappier: A Heritage of Tradition and Innovation
The Drappier house, founded in 1808 by François Drappier in Urville, began modestly with a few hectares of vines. Over the centuries, the house has experienced gradual expansion, marked by visionary choices. In 1930, Georges Collot, Michel Drappier's maternal grandfather, revived the Pinot Noir grape variety by replanting it in Urville, in a region where it had disappeared. His initiative, nicknamed "Father Pinot," is today hailed as a true revolution. Pinot Noir now makes up 75% of Urville's vineyards, a precious heritage passed down from generation to generation. In 1965, a Drappier Pinot Noir cuvée won over General de Gaulle, who became a loyal customer and adopted it for his family gatherings in Colombey-les-deux-Églises. The Drappier house then became intimately linked to the figure of this great man in French history. His favorite champagne, Drappier Pinot Noir, graces the tables of La Boisserie, his private residence near Urville, reinforcing the brand's reputation. In 1990, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the June 18th Appeal, the house created the Charles de Gaulle cuvée, a vibrant tribute to the general. This iconic cuvée embodies the pride and heritage of Maison Drappier. Currently, the house covers an area of 55 hectares, supplemented by the purchase of grapes from partner winegrowers. Michel and Sylvie Drappier's three children—Charline, Hugo, and Antoine—represent the eighth generation of the family, continuing to perpetuate centuries-old family know-how. The exceptional vintages of Maison Drappier , such as Brut Nature, Carte D'Or, Cuvée Charles de Gaulle, Clarevallis, Grande Sendrée 2010 and Brut Exception Millésimé, bear witness to the passion and commitment of this house to produce champagnes of great finesse and unique elegance.
