RHUM DEPAZ: An Authentic Heritage of Martinique Agricultural Rum
The Depaz distillery, founded in 1651, has a history as magnificent as it is tragic. Born from the legacy of the first Frenchman to rule the colony in 1635, Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc, it has survived the centuries, changing owners until it became part of the Pécoul family in 1810. The distillery underwent a crucial transition in 1883, when the Pécoul family decided to focus on the production of agricultural rum from pure cane juice, following the impact of beet sugar production on the island's economy. It was in 1902, during the tragic eruption of the Mount Pelée volcano, that the Depaz family truly entered history. The disaster claimed thousands of lives, but Victor Depaz, then a student in Bordeaux, escaped this dire fate. After years of study, he returned to Martinique and relaunched the family distillery, facing challenges with unwavering determination. Depaz rum is distinguished by its artisanal production and respect for tradition. The production equipment was modernized over the years, and today, the distillery, equipped with 28,000-liter vats, produces an exceptional rum. This agricultural rum, made from mechanically harvested cane and distilled on a steel and copper column, is the result of several generations of expertise. Aging, a pioneer in its time, remains a key element of its unique taste. Depaz rum embodies the essence of Martinique, its volcanic landscapes, and its centuries-old traditions. Its history is deeply rooted in Martinican culture, and each bottle of rum is an invitation to discover an authentic product, rich in history and flavor.
